Poetry: 3 From K W Peery

BLOODY MARYS WITH FREDDIE

In the
mother of pearl
refraction
from Freddie King’s
semi hollow body
fretboard
You could
see every
metal pick scar
the Texas Cannonball
made with
his crooked
‘n calloused
index finger
Just slow
sellin’ it
center stage –
Inside that
Bloody Mary
haze –
With a tone
so honest
it was
painful

BATTLESHIP

I’m a
thick-skinned
battleship
Built to
cut contrary
and be more
controversial
than any
ancient sea
could possibly
tame
There’s no
storm
too strong
or target
too long
to sway
me
I ride inside
the last gasp
my enemies
breathe
before the
thunderclap
finds them
These
hungry ole
war guns
weren’t born
to swing silent
They’re
mine
to fire
whenever
I feel
the need
You’ll never
see me
until it’s
too late
to run –
I am
the final
setting
Sun –
And now
you’ve
been
warned

THREE HOURS AFTER
We were
just sittin’
on an old
picnic table
inside the
Friendly Tavern
when Don
walked in
and shot
at me twice
with his wife’s
Saturday Night
Special

It was
really the
only time
anyone’s
ever tried
that hard
to kill me
in public
And
I’m not
sayin’
it won’t
happen
again
but the
odds
are goddamn
slim
Because
I’m not
livin’ like
I was
back then
and ole Don’s
been dead
since three
hours after
he missed
me
