Bamboozled by Ian Lewis Copestick

When I was younger
I used to really believe
that there was this thing
called society, and there
was an order to things.
That no matter what happened
there were procedures in
place to deal with it. All
of the instructions about
what to do in the event
of a nuclear holocaust,
that we saw on T.V. , or
read about in government
pamphlets promised it.
Now, as I’m older, I look
around and I see just
how thin and flimsy our
defences are. The anarchy
that we sang about in
Sex Pistols songs is
never really that far away.
I don’t know if it’s a good
thing. I don’t trust people
to police themselves, that
goes against all human
nature. But a lot of the
so called law and order
is total bullshit. So I don’t
know if it’s a bad thing.
I’ve known people who
have received longer
prison sentences for
cannabis than for
beating someone to death
with a baseball bat.
That is our law and order.
I don’t know what I believe
in, or if I believe in anything.
Politically, I mean, I’ve lost all faith
in the Left, and I have always despised the Right.
Spiritually too, I’m completely bamboozled.
I believe in something, but
I don’t know what.
I just try to be a good
person, and not fuck
anybody over. It keeps
my conscience clear and
lets me sleep at night.
That’s all I ask for.
